Salimsingh ki haveli
The peacock of Jaisalmer
Salam Singh Ki Haweli (Moti Mahal) Salim Singh-ki Haveli is one of the most distinctive heritage landmarks in Jaisalmer. Located close to Jaisalmer Fort, this magnificent sandstone haveli is famous for its unusual architecture, beautifully carved balconies and its striking peacock-shaped upper structure. Built in 1815, the haveli was commissioned by Salim Singh, who served as the Prime Minister (Diwan) of Jaisalmer. (Incredible India) History of Salim Singh Ki Haveli:- Salim Singh Ki Haveli was constructed in 1815 on the site of an older residence. Salim Singh was one of the most powerful officials in the former Jaisalmer State, and the impressive haveli reflected his status and influence. One of the most famous stories associated with the haveli says that Salim Singh wanted the building to rise higher than the Maharaja's palace. According to the legend, additional upper storeys were later removed after the Maharaja objected to the building's height. However, this story is generally regarded as a local legend rather than something firmly established by historical evidence. (Incredible India) Architecture of Salim Singh Ki Haveli:- The most fascinating feature of the haveli is its peacock-inspired upper structure. The upper portion spreads outward dramatically and is decorated with beautifully carved balconies and jharokhas. The haveli is particularly known for its 38 carved balconies, with each balcony featuring distinctive decorative details. The projecting design gives the building a dramatic appearance and makes it one of the most photographed havelis in Jaisalmer. (Incredible India) The golden-yellow sandstone used throughout the structure reflects the architectural character of Jaisalmer and appears especially beautiful when illuminated by the warm desert sunlight. Places to See at Salim Singh Ki Haveli:- 1. Peacock-Shaped Upper Structure The unique upper portion of the haveli is its most recognizable feature. Its curved design and ornate details create the appearance of a peacock-inspired crown. 2. 38 Carved Balconies Look closely at the balconies and you'll notice intricate stonework and slightly different designs. These beautifully crafted balconies showcase the skill of Jaisalmer's traditional stone artisans. (Incredible India) 3. Intricate Jharokhas The finely carved jharokhas, or projecting windows, are another highlight of the haveli. They combine beauty with the practical architectural traditions of Rajasthan.
